Also called "active shock absorbers", an electronically controlled shock absorber is a smart shock absorber system that is able to change the shock absorber behavior within a few milliseconds, depending on the driving situation characteristics. The computer-controlled system evaluates the data from the environment and makes adjustments to the shock absorber. This way, driving safety and comfort are maximized.
The system's working principle is continuous shock absorber adjustment by processing the data collected from the vehicle. The vehicle's speed, and maneuver are evaluated. For example, if the vehicle is moving on a smooth road, shock absorber settings are stiffened, whereas they are made less rigid if the road is uneven. This way, maximum comfort is ensured in the cabin. Also, in case of sudden braking, shock absorber settings are stiffened to prevent the nose diving so that the driver does not lose control of the vehicle.
The shock absorber system is one of the most critical variables in the safety of a vehicle and travel comfort. To achieve maximum safety and driving comfort, the shock absorber system must be adjusted to vehicle and road conditions. These conditions may change along the road.
In manual systems, these settings cannot be changed along the road, of course. Electronically controlled shock absorber systems solve this problem. It makes adjustments in miliseconds depending on several driving situations and road conditions to ensure safe and comfortable driving always.
