C-ITS is a transportation term that appears often in the news, but is sitill unfamiliar, and is called the next generation intelligent transportation system. C-ITS is an advanced road traffic system that provides real-time traffic information to drivers. We are already using the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), such as real-tiem traffic information, high-pass, and bus arrival information. C-ITS differs in that it provides a two-way transportation service beyon d one-way information delivery.
C-ITS, how to prevent accidents?
Let’s take a look at how C-ITS works this time. There was an accident where cars collided with each other on the road. Incident-related information is passed on to all surrounding cars and road infrastructure via vehicles connected to the C-ITS. Vehicles that have acquired information in real time deliver information about dangers resulting from accidents, such as sudden deceleration, vehicle approach notifications, and collision warnings to the driver. Road infrastructure, such as base stations, also obtains accident information and guides route detours or lane changes.
In the existing ITS, it took a lot of time to understand the accident or congestion situation as it collects and delivers traffic information with a detector installed at a specific point on the road. When C-ITS is estabilished, it is expected to increase traffic safety by exchanging information in real time through V2X technology.
C-ITS essential for autonomous vehicles
The reason why the government and various local governments are interested in C-ITS is that it is a representative technology directly related to autonomous driving. Self driving cars respond to traffic conditions in real time with sensors such as lidar and cameras. There is a limit in bad weather conditions where you can’t see ahead or at a distance of 200m or more.
When autonomous vehicles and C-ITS meet, the vehicle will reflect real-time traffic information and drive autonomously, securing safer freedom of movement.
