The Age of IoT Begins in the Automotive Industry

IoT, the "Internet of Things", has entered our lives in several areas. Now, our vacuum cleaner can clean the house as we are working, or we can use our mobile phones at work to check our home heater and make sure that our home welcomes us as warmly as we want.

It is inevitable for the concept of IoT, which has become a significant part of almost every area of life, to be also used in the automotive industry, the largest branch of the production sector.

What Does the Internet of Things Mean?

Let's start by explaining the concept of "Internet of things." The Internet of things refers to devices communicating with each other via a network. Communicating in the electronic environment, these devices are also able to control mechanical movements. This way, it is possible to control several devices without any time or spatial restriction and ensure that they work in harmony.

How is the IoT Used in the Automotive Industry?

IoT technologies broaden new horizons for vehicle users in different areas of the automotive industry. Let's take a closer look at the applications of IoT technologies in the automotive world.

Connected Vehicles

One of the most important developments in the automotive industry in the last few years is vehicles that can connect to their surroundings. It is thought that there are almost 250 million vehicles embedded with this technology as of the end of 2020. The vehicles' connections with their surroundings are considered in different areas:

Vehicles connected to each other: Speed and location data that vehicles in the traffic share with one another will make the roads far safer and traffic flow much smoother in the future.

Vehicles connected to infrastructure: Thanks to vehicles exchanging data with some infrastructure elements, such as traffic lights, lane marks, petrol stations, and highway toll booths, traffic will be managed more dynamically. This way, waiting times at red lights will reduce and queues at the toll booths, or petrol stations will be shorter.

Pedestrians connected to vehicles and infrastructure: Thanks to mobile phone apps, pedestrians can see the locations of taxis or buses, which is one of the IoT applications we see today. In addition to this, pedestrians will be checking traffic lights on crosswalks with similar applications soon.

Vehicle Maintenance Systems

Almost all modern vehicles continuously monitor several data, and when we go to a car service shop, the staff reads these data and provides required maintenance. IoT technologies will make it possible to see these data and take the necessary measures instantly. This will make fleet managers' job easier. This application will allow early detection of potential failures in the vehicles in the fleet and ensure that more vehicles are in operation.

Autonomous Vehicles

The most impressive application of IoT technologies in the automotive world is autonomous vehicles. Electronically controlled vehicles that interact with the driver and their surroundings will change the way we travel in the near future. Thanks to fully autonomous vehicles, traffic will be much safer, and journeys will be far more comfortable.
