Smart transformation of parking lot: Smart parking

We all have the experience of wandering on the road because we couldn’t find the right parking space. ‘Smart parking’ is attracting attention as a way to solve the parking problem in the city center.

Smart parking is a system that efficiently utilizes limited parking spaces based on ICT Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, big data and artificial intelligence(AI), and 5G. Introducing Smart Parking, you can find a parking space quickly and easily. The system identifies empty parking spaces on its own and notifies them to consumers or parking managers. In addition, it provides various functions such as parking reservation and parking fee settlement throudh the app. Shall we take a look at the smart parking trends that help smarter use of parking lots?

Trend 1 Mobility platform that widens feet with smart parking

The first trend is mobility ‘platform that widens feet with smart parking’. Accoridng the industry, the domestic parking market is a huge market with an annual payment amount of 15 trillin won. The parking lot itself has excellent business potential. It is easy to use as a bas efor electric vehicles or shared vehicles and above all, it is possible to derive useful insights such as areas with high traffic demand, time zones, and optimal travel routes through analysis of parking lot entry and exit data.

Accordingly at the end of the last year, major domestic mobility platforms such as Kakao Mobility, T Map Mobility and Socar are promoting linked businesses by acquiring or partnering with existing parking service companies. Their common goals is to become a comprehensive mobility company. However, the direction they pursue is slightly different.

Kakao Mobility pursues vertical integration of parking business. Kakao acquired the shares of ‘GS Park 24’, a parking operatör, and ‘KM Parking Space’, a parking operation management solution company and incorporated them as subsidiaries within the group. By appyling Kakao Mobility’s parking facilities and KM Parking & Space’s operation management solution to GS Park 24 and brokering direct parking lots with the Kakao T app, they ar vertically integrating the parking business and forming a value chain.

T Map Mobility is trying to focus on its role as a platform. T-Map has partnered with ‘Nice Park’ an unmanned parking lot operator and brokers the parking lot operated by Nice Park through the T-map app. Through this, we are expanding the T-Map ecosystem by providing an organic mobile experience to app users.

Socar plans to use the parking lot as a main base for Socar shared vehicles. Socar took over Modu Company, which operates Modu’s parking lot and stareted to secure Socar zones through the parking surface sharing business. Along with this, they are trying to leap forward as a comprehensive mobility platform by launching a super app that integrates vehicle sharing and mediation functions within this year.

Trend 2 Instituonalization of self driving parking robots

The second trend is self driving parking robots that become a reality. By using the parking robot, you can use more space in the parking lot.

In parking lots that operate parking robot services, there is no need to secure an aisle area for people to get on and off. Therefore, space efficiency can be increased by 30% compared to general parking lots. The driver simply leaves the vehicle in the storage area. The parking robot lifts the vehicle and automatically parks it in an empty parking lot. Also, pick up vehicle and bring it to the zone in time for the driver to return. This reduces parking time and reduces the risk of accidents. It is an essential technology for smart parking service.

Currently, parking robots are produced in three types: ‘Carrier’, ‘Forklift’ and ‘Tow Truck’. For forklift and tow truck types, the parking robot directly lifts the vehicle. On the other hand, the carrier type consist of a parking robot and a pallet and after placing the vehicle on the pallet, the parking robot lifts and transports it together. Although it has the disadvantage of requiring as many pallets as the number of parking surfaces, the parking robot can be made smaller than the other two types. In korea, the carrier type is preferred. This is because most domestic parking lots are small and medium-sized parking lots with less than 100 cars.

In May, the institualization of self driving parking robots in Korea was promoted and the introduction of parking robots started. Considering parking robots as one of the types of mechanical parking devices, starndards and inspection regulations necessary for operating parking robots were created. As a result, domesticv parking robot supply is expected to expand. It is expected to revitalize the smart parking business.

In the near future when smart parking becomes commonplace, how much more convenient will our lives be?
