Briefly stated, Steer-by-Wire is a technology that replaces the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels and provides that connection through electric signals. Since the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering gear is now provided by cable, it is possible to move the steering wheel to the desired location in the cabin. On the other hand, thanks to the Steer-by-Wire technology, the steering wheel's properties can be customized according to the driver's needs and drive modes. Thanks to this technology, the steering wheel can be removed entirely in vehicles with the autonomous driving feature, as the vehicle runs automatically. When the vehicle is in the autonomous mode, the steering wheel can be folded, giving more room for the driver.
The Steer-by-Wire technology is considered one of the most critical components of autonomous driving. Electronically integrated with the vehicle's other systems, it allows making electronic interventions where required. This way, it makes car journeys far safer and more comfortable.
