Is the Auto Subscription System the Future of the Automotive Industry?

Most of us are emotionally attached to our vehicles. Beyond machines taking us from the point A to the B, our vehicles are our companions, even a member of our family. However, this emotional bond does not change the fact that our cars spend a significant part of their lifetime parked. Considering the investment we make for owning a vehicle, it does not sound reasonable to spend a high amount of money on a car that generally sits in the parking lot. Based on this view, auto subscription systems try to provide solutions. The popularization of these systems may turn us from being a car "owner" into a car "user." Sure, our cities will be affected by this change.

The Way to the Change

Subscription systems in different fields have come into our lives over the past few years. Now, we subscribe to a video platform instead of buying DVDs. We choose using music platforms over buying CDs. We have already shifted from ownership to subscription in some product categories, and this will make it easier for us to make the same shift in different product and service categories.

In the automotive world, we have already started seeing the first examples of this change.  Applications allowing us to share our car trips with others to reduce transportation costs have become pretty popular. Businesses that allow us to rent an electric scooter or a car for a few hours are attracting a great deal of interest in most cities of the world.

Initial Examples

You need to make a serious investment to buy a car. On the other hand, you need to afford some maintenance and insurance costs and pay annual taxes to keep your car on the road. Considering your car's value reduces as you use it, owning a vehicle is not much of a good investment for most people.

The applications that tried to solve this problem have started to emerge in different parts of the world. Still in their infancy, these applications have the potential to trigger a great change.

How Can Subscription Applications Change Cities?

Together with all smart mobility solutions, auto subscription applications can reduce urban traffic congestion. The reduction of the number of parked cars will leave more room for those being driven.

However, on the other hand, the fact that traveling by car becomes more accessible may lead urbanites to other alternatives instead of public transport,  which may result in an aggravated traffic problem.

How Will Auto Subscription Applications Affect the Automotive Industry?

At first glance, auto subscription applications seem to reduce the number of vehicles in traffic, thus narrowing the automotive industry's field of business.  However, considering the increasing urban populations and the rising need for vehicles, we can say that the automotive world's business volume will not face a major change.

From a different perspective, auto subscription systems can be said to create growth opportunities for the automotive industry. The reason is that auto subscription platforms have to offer new and well-maintained cars to their users. It can be said that this way, the average age of vehicles on the roads will decrease, so the sales of new cars will rise. Considering maintenance periods of cars will diminish, and their maintenance will not be delayed, new business opportunities can be of issue for after-sale services.

Auto subscription systems are still in their infancy and have to challenge ingrained habits that need to be replaced. However, if they overcome this challenge, everyday life in the future will undoubtedly be much different from today.
