The cold weather does not only affect our lives, but also our vehicles. Although vehicles are produced to withstand all weather conditions, there are various issues that cold weather creates on them and need to be considered. Let's analyse these issues together.
Batteries
Winter is especially difficult for batteries. If your vehicle won't start in extreme cold, one of the most likely problems is a dead battery. To avoid a dead battery, it is recommended to keep its connections clean, tight and free from corrosion. It is also beneficial to replace batteries older than three years. If you live in a really cold climate, buying a battery heater may also be a good solution.
Tires
As the air in your tires gets colder, it contracts and has less pressure. As a result, the air in the tires decreases. Check your tire pressure more often than usual. We recommend doing this once a week. You may think that a small amount of air reduction provides better traction, but tire experts recommend that tires run at the manufacturers recommended pressure, as this can cause uneven or unsafe tread wear. It's always a good idea to buy winter tires in cities with harsh weather conditions.
Engine Oil
As the air gets colder, the oil you use in your vehicle thickens. This causes the motor pump to spend extra power to circulate the oil at minus degrees. In this case, the solution is in synthetic oils. Synthetic oils can provide better starting performance and flow at temperatures as low as -40°C.
Windshield Wipers
Freezing temperatures can cause the rubber on windshield wiper blades to become brittle, which means it can tear or crack. You may want to consider buying winter wiper blades which can be used in harsher climates, but you can also make sure that what you have is not too old. We recommend replacing your wipers every six months.
Car Windows
When driving without defrosting the windows of your vehicle, your breath may condense and freeze inside the windshield. Therefore, make sure that all defrosting and general heating functions in your vehicle are operational.
