HL Mando, a global car parts manufacturer specializing in car suspension, has recently manufactured suspensions for two hundred million vehicles. The company was the first to manufacture automotive suspensions domestically in Korea in 1972, and the reaching of the 200 million milestone is the result of its supplying car parts to various automobile manufacturers, including Hyundai Motors. The total length of the suspension parts HL Mando has produced since 1972 will be 840 thousand kilometers when placed in a straight line, long enough to make twelve turns around the Earth.
A car suspension is a part that connects the wheels to a car body. There typically are four suspensions on a car, supporting the weight of the car and absorbing the vibration from the road. This function makes the quality of suspensions a critical factor that controls comfortableness and stability while driving a vehicle. Suspensions are likely to play a significant role in keeping the car quiet in the era of complete autonomous driving.
HL Mando reported that the company held a ceremony celebrating its reaching global production of car suspension for two hundred million vehicles, or eight hundred million suspension parts on October 20th, 2023. Suspension is the company's core product, responsible for 17.9% of its total sales (751.62 billion KRW), and it is one of three major businesses including braking and steering solutions.
HL Mando is one of the leaders the global automotive suspension market. HL Mando was the first company in Korea to focus on developing Electronic Controlled System (ECS) products, achieving success in domestically developing cutting-edge products such as the Three-step ECS, the Fuzzy Adjustable Control Suspension system, and the Smart Damping Control (SDC).
The SDC in particular is a technology specalizing in electric vehicles, controlling the dampening in real-time depending on the driving condition of the vehicle and the road surface. The control system provides the optimal comfort for the driver and enhances the driving stability of the vehicle by minimizing the impact delivered through the suspension.
The future of HL Mando’s suspension business is promising, with the company signing a contract with Volkswagen Group to supply fifty million suspension parts until 2033. The contract is worth 140 billion KRW, and though the amount supplied to Volkswagen may change each year, it is expected that HL Mando will supply six million suspension parts in a year at most.
