Brake pads. How to use the properly?

The brake pads are the most vital part of a car’s braking system. Without them, you won’t have full control over the brakes. Unfortunately, there are cases when new brake pads wear out very early.

While there are a handful of possible issues why new brake pads wear out early, the most common reasons are bad calipers and slide pins. This is because when new brake pads are installed, you’ll have to remove and re-install the calipers and the pins.

The brake caliper houses the brake pads and the pistons. They slow the car’s wheel by creating friction with the brake rotors.

Because the calipers squeeze the pads against the rotors, a faulty brake caliper will likely result in uneven brake pad wear. This significantly reduces braking power, leading to decreased safety on the road.

Similar to brake calipers, the pins hold the brake pad in place to ensure proper alignment and operation. A damaged or corroded slide pin prevents the caliper from moving back and forth with tire revolution.

Other reasons for uneven brake pad wear include failure to flush the brake lines, not using lower gears, and sudden braking.

Besides bad calipers and slide pins, other reasons for uneven brake pad wear include failure to flush the brake lines, not using lower gears, and sudden braking.

Flushing the brake lines means changing the brake fluid entirely. You flush out the brake system and fill the master cylinder with fresh fluid.

Flushing prevents air bubbles from building up in the brake fluid, keeping them from affecting the brake’s effectiveness.

It’s recommended to flush the brakes every two to three years. Otherwise, some components might not get enough lubrication, resulting in an ineffective braking system and uneven wear on the brake pads.

The gears on manual transmission cars are there for a reason. When driving downhill, shift to lower gears to minimize using the brakes to reduce the odds of brake pad wear and make for a safer drive altogether.

The same principle applies when driving an automatic, as you can use the first and second gear options if it’s included in your transmission.

Constantly driving at high speed can lead to faster brake pad wear because it works harder to bring your vehicle to a stop. The added friction on the pads will pile up, resulting in wear. If you can’t avoid traveling at high speeds, be wary of how hard you step on the brake pedal instead.

Similarly, sudden braking is bad for your brake pads. It creates stress on the suspension and generates excess heat that could deteriorate the brake pads and warp the rotors.

To avoid this, practice keeping a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front.

To achieve the optimal distance, follow the three-second rule. Look for an object ahead of the road, and when the vehicle in front of you passes it, count how many seconds it takes for you to pass the same object. If it’s not at least three seconds, create more space.
