Battery Types

In modern vehicles, the battery is one of those components whose existence we realize when they fail or die. However, the battery in your car serves a vital function like starting the motor. You need to have a good battery unless you want to be stranded unexpectedly in an unexpected place.

Sizes of Batteries

Batteries are grouped by their size. Especially in vehicles with limited space for the engine, such as motorcycles or jet-skis, quite different batteries can be used. Sizes of batteries are specified with a code like YTX-14BS. You can find this code in your car's manual.

Maintenance-Free and Open System Batteries

Battery technologies have developed pretty well in recent years. Used to be one of the most troublesome parts of a vehicle, batteries have reached such a level that we forget about their existence.

The most important reason for this is the more common use of maintenance-free batteries. As their name indicates, maintenance-free batteries require no maintenance during their useful lives.

Open system batteries, on the other hand, need to be checked regularly. When required, the battery should be maintained by adding pure water.

Types of Battery Materials

Different materials are used for storing electricity in batteries. There are zinc-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-iron, and lithium-ion batteries available. The most commonly used batteries today are zinc-acid ones.

Start-Stop Batteries

Many modern automobiles have start-stop technologies that reduce engine idle time for reducing fuel consumption and thus carbon emissions. Batteries with a high starting capacity should be used in vehicles with this technology.  After the starter is pressed, standard batteries are deactivated, and they leave to the alternator the task of supplying electricity.  Therefore, for standard batteries, it is enough to discharge a high amount of energy in a short time. Because a vehicle's starter will not be pressed a few times a day, high-frequency electrical transmission is not required.

However, in a vehicle with start-stop technology, it may be necessary to start the engine dozens of times a day. Therefore vehicles with this technology require batteries with the start-stop function.

Volt and Ampere Values

One of the most significant properties that differentiate batteries is their volt and ampere values. Volt refers to the tension produced by the battery, whereas ampere refers to the battery's capacity.

Modern vehicles generally use 12V batteries. A high ampere value does not affect the vehicle's performance. However, it may be advantageous to use a high-amp battery in vehicles that keep on drawing current when the ignition is off. But you had better stick to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

Another critical variable that is worth paying attention to is CCA values. CCA represents the amount of the current a battery can provide when the vehicle is cold (at −18 °C for 30 seconds) while maintaining a voltage of minimum 7.2 V. It would be wise to use batteries with high CCA values
