Aluminum: Green metal of car industries?

The most common metal on the planet, aluminum. It is light, strong and resistant to corrosion so it is widely used as a main material for cookin foils, pots, window frames and electric wires including beverage cans. As it is a very common metal, it is not an expensive material. Recently, its price has been skyrocketing and is being treated with great respect. What could be the reason?

The reason lies in the weight reduciton of automobiles. A car’s fuel economy is affected by its weight. A 10% eduction in car weight improves fuel economy by 3.8% and acceleration performance by 8%. Cars with poor fuel economy and detrimental to the environment because they emit more carbon over the same distance.

Despite the fact, the weight of the car remains the same ever. Because heavy steel is mainly used. Steel is hard and cheap instead of heavy. Therefore, in order to maintain the manifacturing cost, no material changes were made for general cars except for luxury cars.

The transition to the electirc vehicle era has drastically changed the industry atmosphere. Dur to the battery, electric vehicles are heavier than internal combustion locomotives by more than 2 to 300 kg and the use of lightweight materials to compensate for this has become essential. Aluminum, which is 40% lighter than steel is an ideal material for reducing vehicle weight. As a result, the proportion of aluminum applications in car bodies is increasing day by day.

The global automotive aluminum market is expected to reach USD 111.8 billion by 2026. Such aluminum is evaluated as an important resource for decarbonization of automobile industry.
